For the theme, we're supposed to write about the GLBT community means to us. Well, although I'm a straight and happily married woman, I truly feel as an ally I'm also part of this community. To me, it means hope, equality for all, regardless of race, gender, and sexual orientation. It means acceptance. When will others accept GLBT people to be human and stop treating them like second class citizens?
Truly, the world has made big strides towards equality, especially this past week with DOMA being ruled unconstitutional and Prop 8 being handed down from the supreme court to California only to see it demolished and gay marriages resume in the state. Still there is much to be done. People in the community are still being discriminated against. GLBT teens are homeless and need assistance. Many are still lost and committing suicide despite the organizations like Trevor Project and It Gets Better. And worldwide, anti-gay laws are forcing many in the closet. The GLBT community needs support from its own and others to force those in control to lift bans and allow people to love who they want to love without issues. It's time all of us stood up for equality!
What does the GLBT community mean to me? Taking action and not sitting back. Pride in who you are and standing up for fair treatment, equal rights, and acceptance. Believing that one day everyone will be able to love who they want to love without others taking offense. When will that happen? It all depends on what we do as people to make our dreams a reality.
