Thursday Spotlight - Sammy Jo Hunt

Good morning! I'm happy to have Sammy Jo Hunt here on the blog as a guest! She's back with a new book and an update on what she's working on!

What is it about the M/M genre that makes you enjoy writing it?
I love romance, pure and simple. At the heart of everything, I love a great romantic tale full of twists and turns that centers around two main characters who must navigate the waters of love to find their way together. Beyond that, I think beautiful gay boys are extremely hot and appealing. They’re interesting together, not the same as normal hetero couples such as we’re accustomed to reading about in romance books. I love telling stories about them and that’s what keeps bringing me back to the genre; that, and the desire to tell engaging stories that draw the reader in and keeps them coming back for more.

Knowing my readers are satisfied and emotionally filled at the conclusion of reading something I’ve written is the main reason I write. It’s important to me that my audience comes away feeling like the world is a good place, with hope, love, warmth, and promise, and that happiness is attainable for each and every one of us. I love making my readers feel happy.

What projects are you working on now?

I’ve written about 28 books, novellas, and short stories over the past four years, and I’m slowly working on getting those published. As a grad student, I’m busy and have my studies which keep me away from writing. But after taking a bit of a break to focus on my education the past half year, I’m back to writing and going full steam ahead! I’m working to get many of those stories into print over the next year or so.

As for current publishing goals, Deal with the Devil released today and is available on Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, and other fine ebook retail sites. And Checkmate! will release Feb. 9th from Silver Publishing, a fun hot story about two men and a friendly game of Chess. In addition, even though there have been some personal challenges which put a couple of my latest novels on hold during 2012, I’m hard at work putting the finishing touches on two novels that will be coming out this Spring and Summer of 2013, respectively.

Those novels include Murder, Most Likely, being co-written with sci-fi writer Derek Austin Johnson. It’s a dark, erotic thriller and murder mystery with a married couple at the center of the story. It’s male/female and ménage erotica, combined with a gritty murder mystery and elements of the BDSM lifestyle. Then there’s Haunted by Obsession, a male/male erotic romance, paranormal ghost story, and murder mystery based on a fictional murder that occurred more than one hundred years ago. I love this story, because I love a good old-fashioned ghost story.

I’m really excited about the forthcoming releases of both of these hot & sexy novels. I can’t wait to see how readers respond to them, and hopefully gobble them up! There’s definitely more stories coming from me this year in 2013 on the horizon. So be watching for those announcements in the near future.

Deal with the Devil - BLURB:
Derrick Delaney has been a high-class professional stripper for several years, rolling in money and living the good life. He entertains his choice of elite private patrons in the upstairs VIP lounge, and has his goals and dreams mapped out. Among those plans, taking time out to fall in love is not an option.

Then Scott Silver, a famous rock star, walks into the club and into his life one sultry, fateful night. Their not-so-chance meeting develops into an unquenchable obsession for both the exotic dancer and his musical benefactor. When Scott reveals his true agenda, Derrick’s feelings of anger and betrayal are not enough to make him turn his back on the singer. Come along for the ride as passion sizzles, sparks fly, and fireworks erupt when against his better judgment, Derrick is pressured into signing a Deal with the Devil.

Adult Excerpt from Chapter 2 of Deal with the Devil - 750 words:

Scott’s behavior mystified Derrick. He acted as though they were on a date instead of him being a paid escort. He shook his head, a small smile curving his mouth. Perhaps the man was telling him the truth, and he really didn’t expect anything else in return for his money. This had to be a first for Derrick. No one had ever just paid to meet and talk to him.

He raised wide, questioning eyes to Scott. “Yeah, you can kiss me,” he murmured, waiting, his lips parting slightly in invitation.

Scott paused, watching Derrick’s eyes for a few seconds before leaning in to bring their lips together. It was soft and hesitant, not at all what Derrick was expecting. It sent a myriad of hot shivers coursing through him. Their kiss lingered for a moment longer before Scott pulled away, leaving his heart racing like a schoolboy.

“Can I see you?” Scott asked, eyes dropping to the growing tent in Derrick’s jeans. Raking his fingers across Derrick’s crotch and scratching at the zipper, Scott indicated what he wanted without force or demand. It made all the electricity in Derrick’s body start sending hot jolts of electricity straight to his cock.

Breath quickening ever faster, Derrick fumbled with his zipper, suddenly feeling like a fifteen year-old kid on his first date. Those arctic blue eyes held him prisoner, fingers shaking as he undid the top button and slid the zipper down. Opening his jeans to reveal white briefs, he ran his hand over his hard-on, palming himself, then reached out and took Scott’s hand. Bringing it to him, he placed it warmly on top of his cock, cupping him through his underwear.

Together, they eased the elastic waistband down to reveal his throbbing shaft. Derrick watched as Scott’s eyes went dark with want. The man was unlike any he’d ever met before. It terrified him, sending off more alarms; but then, desire was there, too. Desire like Derrick hadn’t felt in a very long time for anyone . . . maybe never . . . surged rapidly through his body. He sucked in a tight breath as long fingers gently caressed him, thumb rubbing the underside of the head and down the large vein that pulsed beneath the skin. It sent more chills rushing through his body, this slow death by fire from Scott Silver’s touch.

He watched, fascinated, as Scott’s fingers moved up and down the rigid shaft, stroking hot, velvet skin, teasing and driving him wild. Normally, clients wanted Derrick to pleasure them, not the other way around. He didn’t know what to make of this guy. But he wanted more.

“I want to suck you off. Can I?” Scott purred sensually, voice vibrating with desire. Derrick nodded mindlessly, watching as his ebony head bowed low and soft pink lips opened wide to take him inside. Enveloped in that warm mouth, for the first time in forever, Derrick knew he was in trouble.

“Oh, fuck,” he breathed. Defenses suddenly down, Derrick’s breath caught in his throat, surprised at just how good it felt to be touched by this man. He was losing his sense of control over their private party, a critical error in judgment.

Head falling back against the couch, he closed his eyes and wallowed in the sensations of being blown, expert lips and tongue giving him intense pleasure. He felt Scott go all the way down on him, nosing his groin, inhaling his scent, fingers snaking between his thighs to fondle his balls. Then a tender finger was pushing inside his ass, curling tightly and hitting against that spot that stole the air from his lungs, causing his hips to thrust up for more.

A few more seconds of that talented mouth working his cock, a long finger up his ass, and Derrick was groaning and coming in a heated rush, pumping his load down Scott’s throat. Hips jerking, cock stuttering to empty itself of every last drop of cum, and Derrick was breathless, drained of all energy. When Scott pulled off, it was with a lazy lick over the top of his slit, tongue digging into the tiny opening to tease, tickle, and suck him clean.

“You’re delicious,” he commented softly, voice low and gravelly as he met Derrick’s totally lust-blown eyes. Derrick stared back, trying to focus on that beautiful face, those intense blue orbs did fucking things to his insides. “That was amazing,” he whispered, uncertain, guard fucking blown along with his reserves.

CHASING THE DREAM – INSPIRATION, BLURB, & EXCERPT

Thanks for having us here, Michael. For our anthology, my story contribution is entitled The Soul Awakening. It’s an old-school vampire romance combined with erotic love scenes and vivid imagery, all in the male/male genre. It’s a reflection of my love of black and white vamp movies from the 1950s and ‘60s. In this case, the characters are inspired by traditional vampires and lore, but with the sexy, dark good looks of men such as Pierce Brosnan or Adam Lambert. I think there’s nothing better than a hot, gay vampire.
As a kid, I grew up watching old horror movies on Saturday afternoon movie matinees during my adolescence. It’s definitely a departure from the modern pop culture we’re so familiar with now, which revolves around vampires  in such a popular fashion today. Call me odd, but even though the series are well done, I generally don’t follow such programming as Vampire Diaries or Twilight. They’re less appealing to me than the shows I grew up with, such as Dark Shadows. Remember that one? I absolutely loved Jonathon, the elegant, gentleman vampire. For me, that’s the type of story I gravitate towards. Hence, the resulting story written for our anthology is a little along those lines. It’s serious, dark, a little gritty, and heavily romantic. I truly hope you enjoy it.

Here’s the official blurb:

“While on promotional tour across Europe, Michael Nolan’s rental car encounters engine trouble and leaves him stranded in the dead of night. The offer of help from a tall dark stranger sets him upon a life-altering course of events. It could lead to love…but more likely, his own private hell.”

Mature – Adult Excerpt:
Zandor guided Michael beside the bed and began to undress him, leisurely taking his time and enjoying the blush that crept into Michael's cheeks. That dreamlike quality still lingered, and before Michael knew what had happened, Zandor was pressing their nude bodies against the pillows, the slippery satin of deep red sheets sliding against their skin. It was the perfect seduction, and Michael had no will to fight against it. His arms snaked up around Zandor's neck, drawing him down on top of him, the firm, comforting weight of his body and cool skin sending shivers along Michael's overheated flesh. Feeling feverish with need, he sighed deeply and opened his legs wide. They fit together perfectly.
Without words, they were kissing again, Zandor grinding down into Michael's hips. Their skin scraped as they rubbed against each other, their desire apparent as hard lengths met and strained. Then Zandor was on his knees, angling himself down inside and pushing deep within. Michael's breath caught hard in his chest. It hurt, and felt incredible, a kaleidoscope of color exploding behind his eyes as he was filled full of huge, pulsing cock. Michael wrapped his legs tightly around Zandor's back, and then the man settled himself down on top, rocking their bodies together in a slow dance of intense rapture.

Welcome back, Sammy Jo Hunt!

Good morning readers! Welcome to another guest post here at Michael's. I am pleased today to have Sammy Jo Hunt here again on the blog with a guest post promoting her release, A Wicked Encounter.

How long have you been writing? And have you always wanted to be a writer?

Since I was in my teens, when I wrote my first romance novel at the age of 15. But professionally, I’ve been writing since I began my college education back in 1997 for social work. Now, I write a lot for graduate school and most of what I write is clinical and related to therapy and counseling. Some part of me needs an occasional break from that type of psychological intensity. So, for personal enjoyment, I’ve been writing steadily for the past 2 years in the m/m romance genre, and I really love it. I didn’t start writing seriously in the romance genre until two years ago when I became inspired by some people I met in the gay community that made me crave writing fictional romance again. A absolutely adore a good story with a happily-ever-after ending.

To date, what has been the best advice or words of encouragement you've received?

They were from published author Sue Brown. She’s a wonderful close friend of mine. Sue told me almost a year ago that she knew I could do this (become published), and to not listen to the negativity that might come my way. She told me she believed in me, that my stories were good, and to go for it. She promised me she’d be right there for me, cheering me on all the way. I listened, and haven’t looked back since. And she was right. For her encouragement and belief in me, I will always be grateful. I probably wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for her.

What are three things about you that would surprise your fans?

Oh goodness…*Lmao and grins* … I’m a perfectionist, and honest to a fault. Also, I’ve never been married and don’t have any kids at the age of 43 yet. And besides that, hmmm… I’d have to say that even though I’ve always loved to write, and been good at it, and was encouraged by professors back in college 13 years ago to pursue writing as a career, I never once seriously thought about pursuing writing professionally until I met Sue Brown a year ago. I was writing fan fiction for fun and that’s when Sue stumbled across my stories. She started leading the brigade almost from the get-go to encourage me to pursue becoming published because she thought my writing merited it. *grins*

How do you name your characters?

That’s a very good question. It’s interesting too, because it involves quite the mental process to put names to my characters. Once I’ve envisioned a story line and created my plot, and my characters come to life, I look at them in my mind’s eye, see their faces, take into account what they look like, their overall dispositions, natures, and temperaments, and a name will usually come to me. It’s like the name chooses the character, if that makes any sense, based on the aforementioned components.

Sometimes I have to play with several names until the name “feels right” to me. Once I know the name matches the character in the story, it’s a done deal and he or she becomes quite real to me in my imagination. It’s how I’m able to put so much realness into the personas of each male or female I write about, because they’re real people to me, with real feelings and needs. Their story lives … and is written, through me.

Who or what influenced your writing over the years?

I grew up reading and adoring great romance authors such as Jude Deveraux, Janet Daily, Kathleen E. Woodiwiss, and Sidney Sheldon. They were my favorites of the romance genre who captured my imagination and took me on romantic journeys to far-away places. I always wanted to write the way they did. They really inspired me, in style, concept, and originality.

What do you consider the most challenging about writing a novel, or about writing in general?

I think developing a strong plot with great, passionate energy and chemistry that flows effortlessly between the two main characters is essential. Sometimes it’s a challenge. But when those elements come together and work right, the result is magic and it’s what I always strive to create.

What is your greatest strength as a writer?

I study human behavior and have a great deal of insight into how the human mind, heart, and psyche work. That aspect gives me the ability to develop and write great depth of character in the characters in my books. In addition to that, I’ve had a lifetime of experience, some of which has been very emotional and difficult. It’s much more difficult to write about something, a feeling, an emotion, a sensation, an event, if you’ve never been through it yourself. Due to that, I’d have to say there’s not much I can’t write about that I don’t have my own personal experience with. It’s easier to write something you have strong personal feelings attached to, because it’s easier to relate to it. That makes my writing better, filled with more feeling and emotion, and more poignant to the reader.

Tell us your latest news?

Currently, I’m celebrating my first book release for A Wicked Encounter released through Silver Publishing. It’s a m/m erotic Regency-historical romance. You can find it on Silver’s website, Amazon.com, Goodreads.com, and other well-known romance eBook sites.

In addition to that, I’m now under contract for two new books. The first is another novel with Rebel Ink Press. It’s due out on or before Sept. 1st this year, and is entitled Haunted by Obsession. It’s a contemporary, m/m paranormal erotic ghost story and murder mystery. I’ve always loved nostalgic old ghost stories, and just had to write one with a hot, m/m twist on it.

The other project I’m really honored and excited to be working on is an anthology entitled Chasing The Dream. This will be published through my first house, Silver Publishing, and is a joint project with four other amazing writers. You may have heard of Patricia Logan, Sue Brown, Lisa Worrall, and GA Hauser. The five of us have contracted with Silver to each write a m/m short story of some sort following the theme of the title.

I’ve already written mine, and have been privy to both Patricia’s and GA’s stories. They are fantastically hot. I can’t wait to see how readers like this new book. The scheduled release date for our full length novel of compiled stories will be Sept. 17th this fall. That book will be available in both eBook and print copy formats, and will actually be my first printed book. I’m so excited and pleased to be part of this project, and cannot wait to hold the finished product in my hands.

So, in regards to both books, as well as two other writing projects currently in the works, I’ll keep you updated as things progress.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

It’s entitled A Wicked Encounter, released by Silver Publishing on April 2nd 2011 in ebook format. It’s a Regency-style historical that is m/m erotic romance, and is set in the year 1792. The following is a short blurb. I’m super excited about the release and hope you’ll all check it out.

“Christopher Allwyne, Duke of Bellwood, stood to inherit a vast fortune. Still reeling from the loss of his parents and most recently, his Aunt Polly, the Duchess of Bellwood, the young noble found himself traveling in the dark of night to oversee Her Grace's funeral proceedings and to attend the reading of his aunt's will. Along the way, his carriage suffers a devastating accident, and a dark stranger comes to his aid and rescue. The Marquis Evan de Lombard, rich French nobleman, takes an instant interest in the handsome Christopher. Sharing a wicked encounter shortly after meeting, things look promising as love blooms between them. That is, until the Marquis reveals his true identity and purpose.

Once Christopher knows the truth, will he ever be able to forgive Evan and love him, despite the man's indiscretions? Torn apart by dishonesty, can love win out over betrayal and rise to the occasion, reuniting them for a lifetime of happiness? The cost for true love could be a price neither one is willing to pay.”

Can you tell us about your main character?

I was given a plot suggestion by the marvelous Sue Brown, who is a published writer of at least ten m/m erotic novels and short stories. She’s a good friend of mine. We were having a discussion on plot suggestions during the summer of 2010 and she said to me, “How about coach sex in a storm?” It’s really quite amusing, because Sue is from the UK. Being in the USA, I interpreted her suggestion to mean exactly that, a sexual encounter between two hot men in a stage coach from the 1800s.

After talking further with her, she clarified to me that what she meant was an encounter on a bus or a traveling motor coach. It was just the difference in the two dialects native to our countries. But by then, the idea was already firmly in my mind and the plot was expanding like wildfire. I couldn’t get it out of my head.

I was already picturing a stormy night on a lone road in the middle of the English countryside in the dark of night, an accident, and a smaller, handsome aristocratic man being injured and then rescued by a larger, dark, handsome man of imposing stature. That’s how Christopher’s character was born. As I wrote the first scene, when Evan appeared after the accident, he was just very clearly there in my mind’s eye. He was tall, with long, raven-black hair, and piercing blue eyes. It all just fell into place after that, and their hot romance kick-started what turned out to be an epic tale of love and forgiveness. I loved writing this story and hope to one day write more Regency-style romances.

What is it about the M/M genre that makes you enjoy writing it?

I love romance.

Here’s an excerpt from Chapter 1 of my book A Wicked Encounter:

"Christopher, Your Grace? I'm pleased to make your acquaintance," the Marquis de Lombard said with a question in his voice. "Perhaps we can talk more later, and you can tell me all about yourself then. But for now, 'tis probably best if we find some shelter for the night. Are you from this area?" His eyes flickered over the general locale.

"My aunt's castle is somewhere near here, but since I don't know exactly where 'here' is, I'm not sure how far away we actually are," Chris replied. It drew raised eyebrows from the other man, but the Marquis only nodded in response.

"I believe we passed a small inn several miles back. If you don't mind, perhaps we might find lodging there, Your Grace," de Lombard said, indicating the way they'd come. "We need to tend to that cut on your forehead. It looks deep."

Chris nodded and began to climb down from the coach. Mid-step, a wave of dizziness afflicted him and he stumbled. His rescuer caught him by the arm to keep him from falling to the ground, his blue eyes wide with worry.

"Here, let me." De Lombard climbed down behind Chris and supported his body's weight securely. The man's lean frame, pressed firmly against Chris's backside, was warm and solid, and he smelled like leather and warm male spice. The sensation was pleasant, perhaps more than pleasant, the contact stirring unfamiliar yearnings inside Chris. Strong arms supported him as the Marquis eased them both down gently, until they stood on solid, albeit wet and muddy, ground.

"Thank you. You're most kind," whispered Chris, shaken from more than just his near fall. He watched as the tall man hoisted himself back up to grab his leather carryall, then gracefully land on his feet as he jumped back down beside Chris. The man took hold of his elbow and urged him toward a grand carriage that stood off to the side of the road.

A richly cloaked driver hurried to open the door for his master. Chris climbed inside. A small lantern hanging from the center of the ceiling cast a low but cheerful glow on rich velvet upholstery and heavily carved woodwork. The inside smelled just like the man himself, sweet and spicy, of fine wood and heavy, tanned leather. The scent was pungent and filled Chris's nostrils like a drug. He sank into the soft cushioned bench and curled in on himself, closing his eyes for a moment. The Marquis joined him, after speaking quickly in French to his driver and giving explicit instructions on where he was to take them. The man nodded his compliance. "Oui, Monsieur. Absolutement," he answered, then folded up the coach stairs and shut the door.

A moment later, the coach lurched forward, the four black stallions glistening in the steady downpour as their powerful muscles contracted and began the task of pulling the carriage back down the road the way they'd come. The nobleman focused his eyes intently on Chris, a small smile playing at the corners of his mouth.

"You should rest. Close your eyes, Christopher. We'll be to the inn in a matter of minutes," he said reassuringly. Chris didn't argue. He was already too tired to complain or contradict and his head was beginning to throb horribly. He leaned back and drew his damp coat tighter about himself, closing his eyes. The sound of steady horses' hooves lulled him swiftly away, and he slept.

I'm over at Sammy Jo Hunt's!

Greetings!

I'm over at Sammy Jo Hunts place today talking more about Manlove!

:)

Please go gave a look.

Please Welcome Sammy Jo Hunt!

Today, I am honored to have Sammy Jo Hunt on my blog as she releases her new book, A Wicked Encounter.

Please enjoy this interview with this engaging writer.

Thank you for joining us today.

MM: So tell me, how long have you been writing?

SammyJo: Since I was in my teens, when I wrote my first romance novel at the age of 15.

MM: What is your favorite subgenre to write?

SammyJo: I started out writing m/f traditional romance stories of the harlequin variety I grew up reading. But now as an adult, I love writing romance of all kinds, but seem to keep coming back to writing the m/m genre of hot and spicy erotica. Sometimes it’s very romantic and heartfelt.

Other times, it turns out a little harder-edged and more graphic. It depends upon my mood when I sit down to write, what actually ends up translating into the story.

MM: Is there one that you haven’t tried that you see yourself doing in the future?

SammyJo: I may attempt to write a three-some at some point. I’ve read a number of those stories and found them very tempting and enjoyable to read. I’ve just always enjoyed pairing off my characters, out of personal preference. I’ve always believed in that one special love for one person, so it’s generally what I write in the way of stories. But I may attempt a m/m three-some some time. I’m sure it would be very hot and spicy to write that kind of sex scene.

MM: I’m of the opinion that erotica doesn’t have to be real all the time to make a good story, what are your thoughts?

SammyJo: Quite honestly, I’ve spent some time in online fandoms reading m/m erotic fanfic for real people who are cast as characters in erotic fiction. I’ve read a number of stories where real life individuals were changed into characters such as superheroes, dragons, vampires, and werewolves. Those stories are different compared to generally accepted types of stories found in erotic literature. But the thing that sets those stories apart is that they’re not real, they’re very much fantasy. And in some ways, I happen to love it when a great set of characters is created based entirely on fantasy of what’s not real and has no basis in reality, but has a great plot and love story which drives the tale. I very much agree that erotica does not have to be real to be good or to make a good story. Sometimes fantasies are far more appealing and help one get lost in the story better than stories based in reality and real-life concepts.

MM: Who are the authors that you look up to?

SammyJo: I admire so many different authors it’s kind of interesting. Being in college, one is required to read the traditional literary greats of our time. As a result, I have a real appreciation for a wide level of writers and poets. People like Charlotte Bronte,’ Poe, Dickens, and Shakespeare all appeal to me. On the flipside are authors such as JK Rowling who delve into total fantasy, and the romance authors I grew up reading and loving such as Janet Daily and Jude Devereux. They’re some of my favorites.

But for the genre of stories I’m writing now, current authors such as Sue Brown, Chris Quinton, RJ Scott, Cassandre Dayne, and Rick R. Reed really inspire my imagination. They’re all very talented and write their own amazing styles of erotica. I credit Sue Brown for having helped me find my way to getting published. Without her encouragement, I might not be where I am today.

MM: What are you working on now?

SammyJo: I’ve written about 25 books, novellas, and short stories over the past two years, and I’m slowly working through getting those to publishing, since I only just recently began pursuing becoming a published writer. Initially, my writing was for personal enjoyment and not something I intended to go professional with. But since that has happened, I’ve decided to focus on getting many of those stories into print.

My first two stories were full-length novels. I want to finish writing the third of that trilogy and then work on getting all three of them published together as a series. With grad school, I haven’t had time yet. So that is my next goal as far as what I’ll be writing this summer.

As for publishing goals, I’ve recently submitted an erotic m/m short story centered around someone left by his lover just before Valentine’s Day, as well as a novella-length m/m erotic paranormal ghost story and murder mystery. I’m waiting to hear back on both of those. There’s always something simmering in the pot when it comes to ideas. Hopefully there will be several more new stories and/or books released this year. There’s definitely more on the horizon.

MM: Tell us about your first book with Silver “A Wicked Encounter.”

SammyJo: A Wicked Encounter is one of the stories I wrote last summer. It was my first venture into Regency-style historical m/m erotica. Since I grew up loving to read historical romances, I wanted to give that genre a try and test my abilities, even though it’s not a m/f story. Romance and love are still universal, regardless of gender.

This book is about a chance meeting which originates from a carriage accident on the highway in the dead of night during a storm. The two main characters, Evan and Christopher, fall in love quickly. It’s not until after they become involved that there is a link revealed between them which could ultimately destroy their blossoming romance. The story is a series of twists and turns as the boys try to find their way back to each other. It is based partly in fantasy, since I wrote it with the view that gay marriage was tolerated during the time period in which the story is set. Aside from that, it’s historically factual and quite a spicy and emotionally satisfying romp.

This is the actual blurb posted on Silver Publishing’s website: “Christopher Allwyne, Duke of Bellwood, stood to inherit a vast fortune.

MM: When creating your characters, do you have models in mind or are they totally fictional?

SammyJo: Generally speaking, I do have models in mind which I envision to give me inspiration for my main characters. But those models are for a starting point only. The character’s created in each story I write are specific to the plot and what’s happening in the book, and they are enriched and deepened as the tale is weaved. So in that respect, all my characters are entirely original. Beyond that, any supporting characters in the story are entirely fictional and of my own creation.

MM: As an M/M writer, do you feel that the trend is changing where it is becoming more mainstream?

Sammy: Yes, I do. I believe that fan fiction and the growing acceptance of the LGBT communities are finding a voice through the publishing of gay erotic literature. It’s becoming more widely accepted and appreciated, as well as opening doors of all kinds to the gay community and its needs and challenges. I believe within five years, we’ll see a huge trend in the direction of gay media of all kinds. It’s already being evidenced on mainstream television programming with shows such as Glee and so forth. I think it’s a great way to promote equality and create a forum for discussion, tolerance, and acceptance.

MM: As a fellow female in the genre, what is your stance on the difference between male and female gay writers?

SammyJo: Perhaps the biggest difference I’ve picked up on between male and female writers of gay romance is that in general, men are more naturally analytical in real life. As a result, their stories tend to come across as less romantic in the traditional sense of the word. They’re less about hearts and valentines and flowers, bubble baths, and the like. Women tend to be soft-hearted and are naturally caretakers and nurturers in real life. I find that comes across in a woman’s writing style perhaps moreso than that of a man’s. Aside from that, I enjoy reading both male and female authors. They both have their strong, positive points. But I think most people can tell when they read a piece of literature, whether it’s a male or female voice that’s speaking. It’s inherent in who we are based on gender and how we were raised.

MM: I read a blog about M/M writer’s losing their imagination because they are writing the same subjects repeatedly, what are your thoughts? http://www.reviewsbyjessewave.com/?p=42883

SammyJo: I think there’s some truth to what the review posits. I have to agree that it’s easy to repeat oneself and tell the same story over again in a different way if one isn’t careful to avoid it. It can get old and kind of boring. I agree that reading a book should be a great way to lose oneself and escape from reality for awhile, not focus on all of the same issues that are painful which we deal with daily in real life. The whole point of romance is to be romanced. When that doesn’t happen, one generally looks elsewhere for those emotional needs to be filled, whether it’s reading a book or engaging in an actual relationship with another person.

As for my own stories, I may choose to base the story on a common theme, but I rarely write from the same place twice. If a story isn’t interesting to me, it won’t hold my readers’ attentions either. I write what interests me and makes me feel passionate. In turn, I believe that is conveyed to the reader and usually results in a satisfying relationship between author and consumer. I love to take my readers on a fully-encompassing journey where all levels of emotion, heart-ache, angst, rage, jealousy, passion, and intense love are experienced. Without all of those aspects present, a story won’t hold your attention.

I write in a way that rings true to what my own personal desires and ideals are, and hope that there are others who can relate to them and find satisfaction in reading about them. If that happens, then my efforts at writing and telling a great story are worth it because the reader is rewarded in the way I intended when I first sat down to write. That’s all I can ask, is that my reader is warmed inside by the journey they’ve been taken on after they reach the conclusion of the book.

MM: What is it about M/M that pleasures you to write it?

SammyJo: I love romance. At the heart of everything, I love a great romantic tale full of twists and turns. Beyond that, I think beautiful gay boys are extremely hot and appealing. I love telling stories about them and that’s what keeps bringing me back to the genre.
